7 pages a day of A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn
a commitment to myself. to use this 688 page history book as a lens through which I view the current day. as a practice in deepening my understanding of how the present is rooted in the past and how the future is inextricably linked to that understanding. to invite a dialogue about life; our society, how we relate to each other, how we relate to animals, how we relate to the land, the air, the water, how we relate to our past - in this life and in the lives of our antecedents, our personal past and our societal past.
A People's History of the United States will be the jumping off point. join me. comment. share. discuss. invite others. i feel there is a purging of a certain unhealthy part of our identity that we must invite, and then allow, if we are to truly be the United Peoples of the Land. perhaps going through this telling of our history together, honoring the stories of those who have been heard from least - in our textbooks, in the media and at many of our dinner tables - and encountering how closely their stories are tied to our own, how their stories are our own...perhaps that will help us as we continue to identify the parts of ourselves which we must shed in order to become more healthy, individually and as a whole.
reading begins Thanksgiving day, November 24, 2011. 7 pages a day, 5 days a week; M-F. finish date April 10, 2012
I recall one of the greatest lessons my grandfather ever taught me... "Communicating is understanding. Understanding leads to peace of mind. Peace of mind leads towards happiness. Happiness is communicating."
...We communicate in various ways with every breath we take. Personal happiness should stem from principles developed through routines of daily living regarding the ways we communicate.
--Twyla Nitsch, Seneca Medicine Woman, from Brad Steiger's Indian Medicine Power, Chapter 6 p.101
here's to remembering and to deepening our communications - to happiness,
Cheers!
